Training Methodology
Here at Astral Helicopters we operate late model Robinson R22B
training aircraft - the most reliable helicopter ever built. Because
of their unique hover and low speed abilities the helicopter has
many advantages over fixed wing aircraft. In deteriorating weather
conditions the helicopter has the ability to slow down and turn
back, or to simply land in a paddock or on a beach.
Rotorua Airport is one of the country's busiest, with numerous prop
and jet aircraft movements every day. We have our own circuit
pattern and training area out of the way, but as the training
progresses the students are introduced to a busy airfield
environment. Rotorua Airport operates NDB and VOR/DME navigation
aids for our future helicopter instrument training.
Location
Astral Helicopters have landing rights for hundreds of square miles
of pine forests, native bush, mountains and farmland. Our bush areas
begin just 2 minutes flight time away, so you'll enjoy maximum
learning time and minimum transit time. We will probably stop for a
fish or lunch along the way, so don't forget the camera!
Astral Helicopters operates its helicopter training from Rotorua
Airport, in the centre of New Zealand's beautiful North Island.
Rotorua is just three hours drive from Auckland, and marks the
gateway to the bush and mountains of the central plateau, where we
do much of our advanced helicopter flight training. Remote bush
operations and mountain flying are a big part of the helicopter
industry and we'll spend a lot of time here training and exploring
this fantastic area, starting just two minutes flight time away.
Accommodation
Astral Helicopters students can choose from several accommodation
options.
It has several fully self contained rooms available right here at
the airport, or fully furnished company housing nearby to share with
the other students. Alternatively it can arrange full board
including meals in a family environment. Costs range from $40 for
budget rooms, $100 per week for furnished and self contained
accommodation to around $150 per week for full board.
Recreation
When it is not helicopter training it will either be fishing the
crystal waters of the nearby lakes, mountain biking the World
Championship bike tracks, skiing a volcano, hunting, golfing or just
soaking in one of the numerous thermal mineral pools in the town. Or
it might just fly to one of the hidden hot streams in the bush.
