Diploma Aviation Management in Red River College

The Aviation Management program combines business management and flight training in a unique blend designed to prepare graduates for their entry into an aviation career.

The aviation component, delivered by the flight training units, prepares students to obtain private and commercial licenses, including night and single engine instrument ratings. Further electives in the program may provide training in instructor, float, aerobatic, and multi engine instrument ratings. These units will provide comprehensive flight training through the use of flight simulation equipment and a variety of single engine aircraft meeting the approval of Transport Canada standards for flight training.

The management component of the program, delivered by RRC, prepares students for the business elements of the aviation industry through a blend of courses that includes communications, social sciences, computer applications, marketing, human resources and accounting.

Students will be at the College a maximum of three days per week for classroom instruction, and the remainder of the week at the flight training units for flight instruction. Any weather conditions considered too adverse will limit flight instruction.

This course introduces the basic principles and concepts of managerial accounting and the decisions that arise from the implementation. Students will apply basic concepts and principles of financial statement analysis, cost volume-profit analysis, capital expenditures, and budgeting to managerial decision making.

ACCT-1024 Introductory Accounting Part 1

This introductory accounting course studies the complete accounting cycle for a service and merchandise business. The course content includes double-entry book keeping routines, financial statement adjustments and worksheet preparation, and financial statements pertaining to sole proprietorship. Also covered are merchandise inventory topics.

ACCT-2024 Introductory Accounting Part 2

AVIA-1001 Aircraft Engines & Systems

Operation and function of reciprocating and gas turbine aero engines, and basic aircraft systems function including electrical, hydraulic, environmental, landing gear, fire detection, ice and rain protection, fuel, and emergency systems are covered. Aerodynamics fundamentals and basic aircraft structures are also included.

AVIA-1006 Human Behaviour/Ethics

This course is concerned with the three levels of analysis in organizational behaviour (ie individual, behaviour of people in groups, the effects of the organizational system). Students will be provided with the opportunity to relate the theory of organizational behaviour to their own experience and future plans.

AVIA-1008 Canadian Aviation Law

This course covers case studies of aviation law with respect to commercial operations, and cross border operations.

AVIA-1013 Management

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the functions of management. Students will apply theoretical knowledge to analyze problems and situations as they occur in the business environment and design positive solutions. All prior management courses provide a foundation for this course.

AVIA-1017 Commercial Pilot Ground School

Preparation and procedures for a solo cross country flight. Topics include aircraft performance, meteorology, aeronautical chart reading, and use of a flight computer. Navigation techniques including pilotage and dead reckoning, along with the use of radio aids to navigation will be covered. After coverage of remaining topics pertaining to the private pilot license, later topics will cover those pertaining to the commercial pilot licence.

AVIA-1018 Human Resource Management

In this course students will understand topics covering job analysis, description and specifications, employee recruitment and selection. Employee training and development, performance appraisals, and factors affecting labour costs, will also be discussed.

AVIA-1023 Flight Training 1

This course develops competencies necessary to act as pilot in command of an aircraft on a local solo flight. Students will know the necessary preflight procedures to follow, aircraft walk around, essential knowledge to operate the aircraft for take offs, landings, and flight maneuvers. Coverage of the five S's (stalls, spirals, slow flight, spins, and side slips). Dual and solo flight along with some instrument training on a flight training device is included. This course will cover all required training, just prior to cross country, that leads towards the private pilot license.

AVIA-1032 Private Pilot Ground School

This course introduces aeronautical topics that provide essential background knowledge prior to first solo flight. Licensing, medical standards, aircraft components, basic aerodynamics, aircraft systems, flight instruments, meteorology, and radio communications. Coverage of Canadian Aviation Regulations and Aeronautical Information publications will be covered in preparation for PSTAR exam.

AVIA-1105 Math/Physics

Students will develop mathematics and physics skills essential for success in aviation theory courses. Topics covered include standard measurement systems, problem-solving methods, motion, right angle trigonometry and vectors, forces in one dimension, concurrent forces in two dimensions, energy and work, simple machines, rotational motion, equilibrium, centre of gravity, properties of gases, properties of sound and characteristics of electricity and magnetism.

AVIA-1233 Wilderness Survival 1

This course is designed to provide student with an understanding of all weather wilderness survival skills. Students will gain knowledge in this course to survive outdoors in cold weather conditions. All weather survival, limited equipment, and factors affecting survival are examined.

AVIA-1491 First Aid 1

This seminar will introduce students to basic first aid procedures and CPR. Some of the practical training will be conducted within the confines of an aircraft setting.

AVIA-2001 CRM/PDM/SMS

This course consists of lectures pertaining to commercial operations and the role of a commercial pilot. The topics covered in this course are Cockpit Resource Management, Pilot Decision Making, and Safety Management Systems. The goal of this course is to provide the finishing touches to prepare the student for their first career opportunity as a commercial pilot.

AVIA-2010 Flight Training 3

In this course students will gain a competency in instrument flight operations. Also, some work towards other ratings to be obtained towards their commercial licence.

AVIA-2018 Instrument Rating Ground School

This course prepares students for the examination of instrument flight rules. Additional instruction for flight planning, navigation, and meteorology is covered.

AVIA-2024 Flight Training 2

This course develops the competencies to plan and conduct a safe solo cross-country flight. Completion and practice of remaining air work to prepare for the private pilot flight test. After obtaining the private pilot licence, the students will begin obtaining some ratings towards the commercial licence such as those for night flying, and over the top.

AVIA-2040 Flight Training 4

The student will develop competencies pertaining to complex single engine aircraft, emphasis on instrument procedures, and other ratings leading towards the commercial pilot license. Attaining the commercial license is required to complete this course.

BUSA-1020 Business Finance

This introductory course in Business Finance is designed to expose the student to the basic concepts underlying the Financial Manager’s approach to decision-making. The course focuses on the goals and functions of the Financial Manager, financial analysis, financial forecasting, leverage (operating, financial and combined), working capital management, current asset management, sources of short term financing, the cost of capital and capital budgeting. In addition to the foregoing, a review of accounting is included with emphasis on the structure of the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows.

COMM-1108 Communications 1

Students will learn communication theory and strategies for successful business communication. During this course, students will practice basic business letter writing skills, memo writing skills, preparing informational reports and preparing and delivering brief oral presentations.

COMM-2113 Communications 2

This course will focus on the skills of analysis, persuasion, and negotiation. Students will learn the indirect pattern for communicating news that the recipient does not want to hear. They will learn how to present persuasive reports by writing proposals and adapting them for oral presentation. They will develop interpersonal and oral communication skills by managing and participating in meetings. Competent language usage, individual effort, and team work will be emphasized throughout the term. In addition, this course will teach students the knowledge and skills required to summarize their education, skills, employment history, and pertinent personal information in order to obtain employment. Students will develop cover letters, resumes, and portfolios that will reflect the image they want to present to prospective employers. Students will also examine professional and personal skills valued by employers, and explore methods used to develop and strengthen these skills.

ECON-1001 Economics

The general objectives of this course are to help students understand concepts of economic principles in terms of profit maximizing and every day decision making. Emphasis will be placed on absolute scarcity, market pricing in a mixed economy, basic forms of business operations, demand, supply, elasticity, gross revenue flow, etc.

MRKT-1059 Marketing 1

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic marketing concepts and institutions involved in Canadian marketing as well as demographics and pyschographics. Students will also begin to explore the four P’s of marketing mix (product, place, promotions, and price). This course seeks to develop within students a critical outlook and decision making ability with regard to marketing.

MRKT-2066 Marketing 2

This course has greater emphasis on the four P’s.

WRKE-1005 Co-Op Work Experience

Co-operative education integrates related on-the-job experience with classroom study in program related work term positions. Students have the option of taking a 4 month paid co-operative work term after the second academic term. Students selecting the co-op option will be putting their classroom knowledge to practical use to further enhance their skills in their field of study.
