BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Aviation is a fast moving and technologically advanced industry. This course is recognized by European Aviation Law, detailed by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), giving you access to real aircraft experience. It is a balanced practical and theory-based course for the licence element and a professional engineering degree course for the BSc (Hons).

This course offers excellent career opportunities worldwide. The EASA Part-66 Licence qualifies its holders to be selected for further aircraft-type authorization before being permitted to sign off aircraft for flight.

You can gain employment throughout the UK and across the world with manufacturing companies, commercial airlines, air-taxi operators, flying schools, the armed forces and commercial long-haul flights. There is a growing market for maintenance, repair and overhaul of military and commercial aircraft, or you may choose sub-contract work.

Thanks to a recent £300,000 investment programme, the facilities are excellent. They include an engineering flight simulator, fully equipped wind tunnel and a gas turbine engine.

The University of Glamorgan and the International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) jointly offer innovative EASA Part-66 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License-based Honours degrees. After you successfully complete the course, you must work for two to five years in an approved aircraft maintenance organization (EASA Part-145) before full signatory powers can be awarded by EASA. There are no exemptions from any of the EASA Part-66 examinations

Career prospects

Aerospace is a dynamic, fast moving and technologically-advanced industry. This course offers excellent career opportunities worldwide as the EASA Part-66 Licence qualifies holders to be selected for further aircraft type authorisation prior to being permitted to sign off aircraft for flight. Aircraft maintenance engineers work for airlines, maintenance divisions of aero-engine manufacturers and specialist aircraft maintenance companies.

Additional Information

At the end of the degree, if you have attended for at least 2,400 hours of the EASA element, passed all EASA Part 66 modules at 75% within three attempts and completed 20 weeks of approved work experience, you will get a 3 year reduction in your experience requirement for an EASA Part-66 Licence. If you do not meet this criterion, you will need 5 years experience before you can get your License. Neither outcome will
affect your Degree.

The Facilities include has a modern flight software and motion system which gives you a realistic and accurate flying experience. You will be able to make changes to the aircraft’s geometry and flight characteristics and assess how this affects handling quality and stability. Flying is simulated through visual reference to the horizon in normal flight and to the runway during take-off and landing through an LCD screen in the cockpit, an experience you won’t forget!
