GIST Master Programmes offer students an outstanding postgraduate education of the highest quality as a designed melange of academic and industrial-linked courses in modules style, project-based and industry-oriented.
Industry Connection
Rather than an exclusively academic theory approach, GIST`s practical orientation is equally focused on launching its students on the path of a successful career. It is for that reason GIST provides optimal preparation by top-level personnel from our worldwide industry partners.
Partners are involved in the development of the curricula and participate actively in the programmes by deploying lecturers and mentors. Students are also exposed to the operational dynamics of global companies during a compulsory two month internship with a company or during the course of the six month master thesis.
Industry sponsors for the programmes include Altana, BASF, Budenheim, Degussa, Infineon, SGL Carbon, Siemens, Sud-Chemie and Wacker to name a few. They have contributed to the project by offering scholarships, internship opportunities and Performance Awards to students.
Academic Excellence
GIST leverages on the highest academic standards to equip its students with the skills and training necessary to overcome the toughest challenges of the industry. All applicants undergo rigorous screening by the Programme Management Committee after which GIST welcomes successful candidates for an eighteen-month accelerated program of scientific training, practical research, and cultural enrichment.
Study with some of the most renowned lecturers including Nobel Laureates, the President of TUM, and Deans and Professors of TUM, NUS and NTU. In contrast to the practice of teleteaching, all international lecturers are engaged on an exclusive basis for the lecture period in Asia. Nowhere else will you have more direct and intimate contact with your instructors, and nowhere else will instructors complement your academic progress in a more efficient and focused way than in classes with 25-30 students in our Master programmes.
International Experience
GIST combines the scientific, technical and business expertise of the East and West to offer its students a unique education experience that carries them successfully across geographical and cultural barriers.
Through our cross-discipline modules and organized stays in Asia and Germany we provide students with invaluable insights into these two different cultures and actively support requirements of corporate need to overcome cultural differences in business. Courses in the curriculum include modern European and Asian history, give basic understandings of European art, music and theatre, and throw light on different customs and practices. A German language course is also conducted in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute Singapore.
Internship
After studying two semesters, all students have to complete a two month internship - either an industrial or an academic - at one of our universities. After full time successful employment students will get 4-credit points (TUM), but no grade. The internship can be conducted in Germany, any other European country or Asia. Students with industrial scholarships will undergo their internship with their sponsor company. Meanwhile students without industrial scholarships will have internships arranged either by themselves or GIST.
The purpose of the internship is to provide a structured and supervised work experience. This will help the students to gain job-related skills and to achieve their desired career goals. Before application for the internship there will be an informative meeting to provide our students with all necessary knowledge to succeed in finding the best place and company for the internship. This meeting will be mid of the first semester at GIST.
Master Thesis
The thesis is the culmination of graduate work and an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that students have acquired through course work and research assistantships. Through this guided learning experience, students work in collaboration with industry-partners or other researchers on a project of mutual interest and may in some cases publish manuscripts resulting from the thesis. The thesis should be practical based. Theoretical frameworks or conceptual models may (and should in many cases) guide the research questions. A strictly theoretical paper is not acceptable for a master`s thesis.
Organization of the thesis: Since the masters time line is quite short, it is important to start exploring and discussing possible thesis topics as early as possible, no later than the end of the first term. After deciding if the thesis-project will be carried out at an industry- or an university-site the student has to find an university-supervisor. Professors or the GIST-staff will assist in finding the right supervisor either at TUM or at NTU. For the final completion of the thesis project, the student prepares a written thesis that will be rated by the university-supervisor together with (if applicable) the industrial supervisor.
