BEng. (Hons) Aeronautical
Engineering
The UK’s aircraft and aerospace industry is one of the largest in the world and
contributes significantly towards regional and national economic growth and
productivity.
Aeronautical engineers apply a wide range of engineering knowledge and skills to
the design, development, manufacture, maintenance and operation of flight
vehicles and related products.
This course will prepare you for a career in the aviation industry. It covers
key aspects of aeronautical engineering, including aerodynamics, propulsion,
aircraft materials and structural design, aircraft systems, control and
stability. You will be based at the University of Glamorgan and the
International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) Barry College, which is
located next to Cardiff International Airport. By graduation, you will be ready
for a career in the exciting world of aviation, which includes the design,
development, manufacture, maintenance and operation of flight vehicles and
related products.
The state-of-the-art Merlin MP521 engineering flight simulator has
just arrived which means you can take to the skies and put all your theory in
practice.
The facilities include a modern flight software and motion system which
gives you a realistic and accurate flying experience. You will be able to make
changes to the aircraft’s geometry and flight characteristics and assess how
this affects handling quality and stability. Flying is simulated through visual
reference to the horizon in normal flight and to the runway during take-off and
landing through an LCD screen in the cockpit.

HOW TO STUDY
You will spend approximately 18 hours per week in lectures, tutorials and
seminars. You will spend about 20 hours per week doing research, studying
current issues and preparing for future lectures. Modules are assessed through a
mixture of exams, coursework and problem-based exercises. Most of the teaching
takes place at the University of Glamorgan’s Treforest campus but some of the
specialist or optional modules will be taught at ICAT.
Career prospects
The UK’s aircraft and aerospace industry directly employs a highly skilled
workforce of approximately 124,000 people. The average salary in this sector is
44% higher than the UK average and 31% above the manufacturing average (Society
of British Aerospace Companies – Annual Survey 2007). The sector is also highly
R & D intensive fuelled by the tremendous business growth as the global demand
for freight and passenger travel increases year on year. This course prepares
you for a career in all areas in the air transport industry, which includes the
design, development, manufacture, maintenance and operation of flight vehicles
and related products
